LANGKAWI, 24 May 2023 - The Defence Minister of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan officiated the inaugural 2023 Langkawi Maritime Conference (LMC) at PARKROYAL Langkawi Resort.

The conference was held today by the Royal Malaysian Navy and Alpine Integrated Solution Sdn Bhd. It was witnessed by The Chief of Navy, Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman bin Ayob, along with 300 invited guests and participants.

Previously known as the National Maritime Conference, the LMC is an international forum for participants to come together and gain understanding on a given topic discussed by panel speakers as well as through interactions.

Today’s conference is themed "Malaysia a Maritime Nation: Steering The Course" and discussed two main topics, namely Ocean Governance and Blue Economy. The theme and topics chosen were intended to continue to dignify Malaysia as a maritime nation.

In his welcoming remarks, the Defence Minister said that ‘this conference would be a fitting and strategic platform to facilitate vigorous, substantive, and meaningful deliberation and discussion among maritime stakeholders”. The LMC has gathered together stakeholders in national maritime affairs, namely government officials, maritime agencies and industry players as well as academic institutions both local and international.

The first session deliberated on "Underpinning Ocean Governance", which explored the notion of having a maritime ministry or a single governing body to coordinate and take charge of maritime related policies in line with the effort to elevate Malaysia's status as a strategic and important maritime nation.

The conference was privileged to have prominent panel speakers for this topic namely Mr Mohd Helmy bin Ahmad from the National Security Council, Professor Stuart Kaye from University of Wollongong Australia, Dr. Tharishini Krishnan from National Defence University of Malaysia and moderated by First Admiral Shaiful Nizam bin Abdul Manan from the Royal Malaysian Navy.

The second session meanwhile discussed "Sustainable Maritime Economy", which aimed to encourage collaboration amongst maritime agencies and stakeholders towards effective resource usage and optimisation to sustain and explore the maritime sector, particularly in the context of the Blue Economy and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The panel speakers were Captain Mohamad Halim bin Ahmed from Malaysia Marine Department, Dr Su Wai Mon @ Faridah from University Malaya, First Admiral (Maritime) Ahmad Faridi bin Ferdaus from the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency and moderated by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nor Aieni binti Hj Mokhtar from the UN Ocean Decade Advisory Board, IOC-UNESCO.
